After finishing up some errands, was feeling motivated so I started changing the van oil as it was overdue. S tarted typicality: drain, plug, refill, remove intake tube from air box to throttle body , remove cap, pitch old filter , and just as I’m replacing the o-ring for the cap I heard a PING and parts fly, the plastic break and spring shoot out. I f ind some parts, but some are still attached in the housing, try and retrieve and broke it in pieces in my hand and down into the housing. Go buy new part, remove what I can with a shopvac and collect those pieces. Confident there aren’t anymore pieces in the housing, put it back together and finish the job. What would have taken 30 minuets took about 1.5 hours. Boo

all oil filters should be screw on

I take it that’s the 3.6 engine, yeah? Now I fear for mine as well. I seem to remember that some Pentastar engines had a problem where a plastic part in the oil filter housing failed , that might be what happened to you.

It really just popped off while nothing was happening, except all the kinetic energy stored in the spring. The remainder of the plastic valve crumbled like a cheese puff before I threw it away.
It was a easy enough fix if you have a vacuum you don’t mind getting some oil in the hose. I was initially worried I would start sucking oil up and out, but that didn’t happed.

Where the drop in filters maybe better, the screw on ones are fail proof.
